CALL TO ACTION: PLEASE TESTIFY
THIS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21st.
THIS IS OUR BIG CHANCE TO CONTROL OVERTOURISM!
Maui residents agree that we already have too many visitors, yet the hotel development industry wants to keep building more and more without end! Overtourism is a serious problem affecting our quality of life, and people are looking for solutions. We can’t control what the airlines do, so the best way to remedy overtourism at the County level is to limit where people can stay when they come here.
This Friday, the Maui County Council will be voting on Bill 159, “A BILL FOR AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE COMPREHENSIVE ZONING ORDINANCE RELATING TO TRANSIENT ACCOMMODATION CAPS.” In spite of misinformation being promoted by opponents of the bill, THIS BILL WILL NOT AFFECT EXISTING JOBS. The bill only applies to NEW transient accommodations.
We have TWO opportunities to influence this legislation:
- TOP PRIORITY is this FRIDAY, October 21st, when the Maui County Council will be voting on Bill 159, “A BILL FOR AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE COMPREHENSIVE ZONING ORDINANCE RELATING TO TRANSIENT ACCOMMODATION CAPS.” Please make time to show up and testify in support of this bill. Tell our council members that the community supports a cap, and that we want to prioritize the quality of life for our residents first. Those who want to promote the unchecked growth of tourism are planning to oppose the bill, and we need as many people as possible to testify and make sure the voices of our community are heard!Testimony on this item will likely not be heard until after lunch (plan on 1:30pm)
