Congratulations Maui!
The County Council has heard our voices, and has voted to override Mayor Victorino’s veto of Bill 148, the Visitor Accommodations Moratorium. This bill will now become law, and will stop approval of any new hotels, timeshares, short-term rental homes, and transient vacation rental units for two years, or until tourism management measures are implemented. This pause will give us time to address Maui’s overtourism issues.
Maui Tomorrow strongly supported this bill.
We would like to thank all who testified and spread the word to counter the pressure that was placed on Council members by the hotel development industry. We encourage everyone to stay involved as we work with the Council to adopt sensible tourism management measures, and to place Maui’s visitor industry on a more sustainable footing, emphasizing Quality Over Quantity.
