The state Land Use Commission voted Friday to approve district boundary amendments allowing the Kula Ridge subdivision to move ahead with its $35 million development of 116 homes on 51 acres mauka of Kula Highway.
LUC allowed 34.5 acres to go from agricultural to urban district and 16.5 acres from agricultural to rural.
According to the Maui News:
Lisa Judge, Maui’s member on the Land Use Commission, voted against Kula Ridge, saying it would be too urban.
“It was and continues to be a rural setting,” said Judge, later adding that “this is not the right site for this type of development.”
…
Judge shared other community concerns about the project, including the likelihood that it would generate traffic congestion and create pedestrian safety problems.
…The commission included in its approval conditions requiring a traffic study and sidewalk design and water plans. The panel’s conditions echoed some of the conditions imposed by the Maui County Council when it approved the project in October 2010.

In order for further approvals on the Kula project many Kula residents would agree that the highway should be widened to allow a lengthly left hand turn lane off Kula Highway and a right hand turn lane lane in the opposite direction.
This intersection of Kula Highway will cause a traffic back up without them.
Do you know if this might be a condition imposed already by the Maui Council when it approved the project?
Can you please let me know who I can direct my comments to to ensure that this is a condition of final approval?
